Kuwaiti Mall Attack: Errant Iraqi or US Missile?

The attack last night on the Kuwaiti shopping mall raises a couple of interesting questions, although you'd be hard-pressed to find them in US corporate media outlets.

The first has to do with who fired the missile. The concensus is that it was a Chinese-made Silkworm missile fired by Iraq. Of course this is possible, and we'll get back to that.

However, the New York Times reports that the initial assessment by Kuwaiti officials was that this was an errant US missile. The Times report quotes two officials, one of whom, a Kuwaiti police colonel, says, "It was an American cruise missile, we know from the markings and writing on it."

These English markings could be seen in live TV reports from the scene (MSNBC anchors even pointed that out last night, without of course raising the possibility that this could have been a US-made missile).

But even if we take the US and Kuwaiti official story at face value, that this was an Iraqi missile, there is another question that comes up. These reports indicated that the Iraqi missile originated from the Faw Peninsula--how is that possible when even Iraq admits that the area is under US and British control?
